DOUBLE SEVEN - The Upsetters
(CD: Trojan CDTRL70) 1974 • Produced by Lee Perry

1. KENTUCKY SKANK - The Upsetters • 2. DOUBLE SIX - U Roy • 3. JUST ENOUGH TO KEEP ME HANGING ON - David Isaacs • 4. IN THE IAAH • 5. JUNGLE LION - The Upsetters • 6. WE ARE NEIGHBORS - David Isaacs • 7. SOUL MAN - Lee Perry • 8. STICK TOGETHER - U Roy • 10. HIGH FASHION - I Roy • 11. LONG SENTENCE • 12. HAIL STONES • 13. IRONSIDE • 14. COLD WEATHER • 15. WRAP YOU WAA - The Upsetters

This is a great album, and the best one that makes up part of the not-so-great Upsetter Compact Set (see below). Besides being very groovy, it's also a ground breaking album, as Perry was probably the first producer in Jamaica to use synthesizers in his work ("Kentucky Skank", "Double Six" "Soul Man"). Killer tracks include "Kentucky Skank", Perry's homage to KFC complete with deep frying sound effects, the lovable nuttiness of U Roy on "Stick Together", and The Upsetters' haunting "In The Iaah" and the rain soaked "Cold Weather".

EASTWOOD RIDES AGAIN - The Upsetters
(CD: Trojan CDTBL125) 1970 • Produced by Lee Perry

1. EASTWOOD RIDES AGAIN • 2. HIT ME • 3. KNOCK ON WOOD • 4. POPCORN • 5. CATCH THIS • 6. YOU ARE ADORABLE • 7. CAPSOL • 8. POWER PACK • 9. DOLLAR IN THE TEETH • 10. BABY BABY • 11. DJANGO (OLD MAN RIVER) • 12. RED HOT • 13. SALT & PEPPER • 14. TIGHT SPOT

Much of The Upsetters' early music was inspired by spaghetti westerns, and this album sees the band loading their six shooters for some tight grooves. Killers include the title track (with Perry's crazy intro), and the sequel to the 1969 hit "Return Of Django", the lazy "Dollar In The Teeth". Be warned! The tricky dicks at Trojan have re-released another, larger collection called Scratch The Upsetter Again (see below), which also includes all of these tracks, so you're better off getting that one!

KUNG FU MEETS THE DRAGON - Lee Perry & The Upsetters
1975 • Produced by Lee Perry

1. ENTER THE DRAGON • 2. THEME FROM HONG KONG • 3. HEART OF THE DRAGON • 4. HOLD THEM KUNG FU • 5. FLAMES OF THE DRAGON • 6. SCORCHING IRON • 7. BLACK BELT JONES • 8. SKANGO • 9. FUNGAA • 10. BLACK BELT • 11. IRON FIST • 12. KUNG FU MAN

A wild dub album that pays homage to Bruce Lee movies, with Perry delivering crazy kick ass rants and dragon noises. The Upsetters are joined by melodica ace Augustus Pablo and Jamaican guitar hero Earl "Chinna" Smith here, delivering a great vibe. Killers include "Black Belt Jones" (a version of The Versatiles' "Cutting Razor") and "Iron Fist".

THE ORIGINAL SUPER APE - The Upsetters
(CD: Jet Star CRCD67) 1978 • Produced by Lee Perry

1. BAG OF COLLIE - Dillinger • 2. DOWN HERE IN BABYLON - Brent Dowe • 3. DYON ANASWA - Full Experience • 4. RETURN OF THE SUPER APE - Lee Perry • 5. TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD - Upsetters • 6. BIRD IN HAND - Upsetters • 7. CRAB YARS - Upsetters • 8. SHOULDER TO THE WHEEL - Upsetters • 9. JAH JAH AH NATTY DREAD - Lee Perry • 10. PSYCHE AND TRIM - Lee Perry • 11. THE LION - Upsetters • 12. EARTH A GO WHEEL - Flying Sensation • 13. HUZZA A HANA - Lee Perry • 14. HIGH RANKING SAMMY - Lee Perry • 15. WEAK HEART A GO FEEL IT - Upsetters

This re-issue of the original Return Of The Super Ape adds several bonus tracks, including Brent Dowe's magnificent "Down Here In Babylon" and four others. This is perhaps the spookiest Upsetters album (the horrific cover art should tip you off). Jammed with violent sound effects, jazz riffs, and a menacing atmosphere, this album is a must. On "Return Of The Super Ape", Perry blasts away with a machine gun and warns "don't insult I, or I will make you pay!" - later it sounds as if he's destroying the studio (an eerie foreshadowing of the Black Ark torching a year later). It's as if Perry wanted to make some kind of violent statement with this album to signal the end of an era in reggae... The rocking "Dyon Anaswa", "Weak Heart A Go Feel It", and Perry's monster "Jah Jah Ah Natty Dread" are extra heavy killers on this killer album.

RETURN OF DJANGO - The Upsetters
(CD: Trojan CDTRL19) 1970 • Produced by Lee Perry

1. RETURN OF DJANGO • 2. TOUCH OF FIRE • 3. COLD SWEAT • 4. DRUGS AND POISON • 5. SOULFUL I • 6. NIGHT DOCTOR • 7. ONE PUNCH • 8. EIGHT FOR EIGHT • 9. LIVE INJECTION • 10. MAN FROM M.I.5 • 11. TEN TO TWELVE • 12. MEDICAL OPERATION

If you have to take just one Upsetters album to a desert island with you, this is it. The Upsetters' first album contains most of their finest moments: "Return of Django", "Drugs And Poison", "Touch Of Fire", and the killer "Medical Operation". Take off your jacket and suck it!

RETURN OF THE SUPER APE - The Upsetters
(CD: VP VPCD1001) 1978 • Produced by Lee Perry

1. DYON ANASWA • 2. RETURN OF THE SUPER APE • 3. TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD • 4. BIRD IN HAND • 5. CRAB YARS • 6. JAH JAH AH NATTY DREAD • 7. PSYCHE AND TRIM • 8. THE LION • 9. HUZZA A HANA • 10. HIGH RANKING SAMMY

This is simply not a very good version of this album; apparently it was mastered from poor quality vinyl. A better choice is Original Super Ape (see above), which combines all of these songs plus five dynamite bonus tracks.

SCRATCH THE UPSETTERS AGAIN - Lee Perry & The Upsetters
(CD: Trojan TRCD352) 1968 - 1970 • Produced by Lee Perry

1. BAD TOOTH • 2. DENTIST • 3. OUTER SPACE • 4. ONE PUNCH • 5. WILL YOU STILL LOVE ME TOMORROW (Dave Barker) • 6. TAKE ONE • 7. SOUL WALK • 8. I WANT TO THANK YOU • 9. MULE TRAIN • 10. TOUCH OF FIRE • 11. SHE IS GONE AGAIN • 12. THE RESULT • 13. EASTWOOD RIDES AGAIN • 14. HIT ME • 15. KNOCK ON WOOD • 16. POPCORN • 17. CATCH THIS • 18. YOU ARE ADORABLE • 19. CAPSOL • 20 POWER PACK • 21. DOLLAR IN THE TEETH • 22. BABY BABY (Val Bennett) • 23. DJANGO (OLD MAN RIVER) • 24. RED HOT • 25. SALT & PEPPER • 26. TIGHT SPOT

A fine collection of instrumental Upsetters grooves, one of the best you can get. This CD version is a combo of two LPs, the original Scratch The Upsetter Again and Eastwood Rides Again - Trojan has also re-released Eastwood separately on CD, but this one contains all of its tracks! ("Trojan, I sentence you to 152 years for public jestering!"). Killers include Dave Barker's lovely "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", "Take One" (an alternate version of the fantastic "Medical Operation"), and the incredibly funky "Red Hot".

SOME OF THE BEST - Lee Perry & The Upsetters
(CD: Heartbeat CDHB37) 1968 - 1972 • Produced by Lee Perry

1. PEOPLE FUNNY BOY - Lee Perry • 2. DA DA - The Upsetters • 3. SHOCKS OF MIGHTY • 4. SET ME FREE - Dave Barker • 5. LIVE INJECTION • 6. FREEDOM TRAIN - The Upsetters • 7. FINGER MASH - Lee Perry & The Silvertones • 8. DUPPY CONQUEROR - The Wailers • 9. UPSETTING STATION - Dave Barker • 10. THE THANKS WE GET - Junior Byles & Omar Perry • 11. FU MAN VERSION - Linval Thompson • 12. KISS ME NECK • 13. KEEP ON SKANKING - The Upsetters

Yes, this really is some of the best! This makes part three of a great Upsetter trilogy, along with Upsetting The Nation and Upsetter Collection. This stuff is rather rare, and so Heartbeat had to master quite a few from scratchy records. But who cares when the music's this cool though? Killers include the unstoppable "Live Injection" (if you don't move to this, then you must not move at all), "Freedom Train", a Sam & Dave-esque soul number, and the crazy "Da Da" - a suitable title for the Salvador Dali of Reggae, Lee Perry. Also here is a little known Wailers tune, credited to The Upsetters, "Keep On Skanking".

SUPER APE - The Upsetters
(CD: Mango 162 539 417-2) 1976 • Produced by Lee Perry

1. ZION'S BLOOD • 2. CROAKING LIZARD • 3. BLACK VEST • 4. UNDERGROUND • 5. CURLY DUB • 6. DREAD LION • 7. THREE IN ONE • 8. PATIENCE • 9. DUB ALONG • 10. SUPER APE

"DUB IT UP blacker than DREAD" proclaims the comic book cover of Super Ape, a fine album of heavy Black Ark dubs and haunting vocals. Many consider this to be Perry's finest work as a producer; it's a great album that gets better and more intricate with each listen. Killers include the crazed, ganja cloud toasting of Prince Jazzbo on "Croaking Lizard", the spooky "Dread Lion" and the rootsy "Zion's Blood".

THE UPSETTERS A GO GO - The Upsetters
(CD: Heartbeat CDHB136) 1969 - 1973 • Produced by Lee Perry & Glen Adams

1. UPSETTERS A GO GO • 2. GRAVE YARD BULLY • 3. NO JOKE • 4. LOCK IT UP • 5. WHAT ABOUT AFRICA • 6. ZANG ZANG ZAY • 7. MOVE ONE WAY • 8. SOUL CONSTITUTION • 9. X RAY VISION • 10. CYPRIANO • 11. LOOKING DREAD • 12. MAMA I LOVE YOU • 13. RED OR RED • 14. RISE AND SHINE • 15. MELLOW MOOD • 16. TAN YAH

This is a good - but not great - collection of rare and unreleased Upsetter tracks restored and re-mixed by Glen Adams in 1995 (Perry wasn't involved). "Sipreano" gets the remix treatment here as "Cypriano", but for some crazy reason Adams cut out the cinematic Lee Perry intro about "counting your chickens", which is the best part of the song! With no real killers, this is for big time Upsetters fans only.

THE UPSETTER COLLECTION - The Upsetters & Friends
(CD: Trojan CDTRL195) 1969 - 1973 • Produced by Lee Perry

1. COLD SWEAT - The Upsetters • 2. RETURN OF DJANGO - The Upsetters • 3. CHECK HIM OUT - The Bleechers • 4. DJANGO SHOOTS FIRST • 5. KILL THEM ALL • 6. THE VAMPIRE • 7. DRUGS AND POISON • 8. SIPREANO • 9. BLACK I.P.A. - The Upsetters • 10. BUCKY SKANK - Lee Perry • 11. WORDS OF MY MOUTH - The Gatherers • 12. TIPPER SPECIAL - The Upsetters • 13. COW THIEF SKANK - Lee Perry & Charlie Ace • 14. FRENCH CONNECTION - The Upsetters • 15. BETTER DAYS - Carlton & His Shoes • 16. FREAK OUT SKANK - The Upsetters

This is simply the best Upsetters collection you can get. It shows off the band at their weirdest ("Cow Thief Skank", "Kill Them All", "Tipper Special"), their tightest ("Return Of Django"), and their grooviest ("Cold Sweat", "Drugs & Poison"). Most of the tracks are killer, and the weaker ones never fall below "not bad".

THE UPSETTER COMPACT SET - The Upsetters & Friends
(CD: Trojan CDPRY1) 1970 - 1974 • Produced by Lee Perry

Disc One: 1. DO YOUR THING - Dave Barker • 2. DREAMLAND • 3. LONG SENTENCE • 4. NOT GUILTY • 5. COOL AND EASY - The Upsetters • 6. WELL DREAD - Addis Ababa Children • 7. MY GIRL • 8. SAWDUST - The Upsetters • 9. PLACE CALLED AFRICA - Winston Prince (Dr. Alimantado) • 10. ISN'T IT WRONG - The Hurricanes • 11. GO SLOW • 12. BAD LUCK • 13. MOVE ME • 14. MY GIRL - The Upsetters • 15. TIGHTEN UP - Dillinger • 16. DJANGO SHOOTS FIRST - Sir Lord Comic • 17. UNCLE CHARLEY • 18. SOKUP • 19. DOUBLE POWER • 20. LOVER VERSION - The Upsetters

Disc Two: 1. RUMPLESTEELKIN - The Upsetters • 2. SKANKING - Dillinger • 3. KUCHY SKANK - The Upsetters • 4. CONNECTION - Dillinger • 5. OPERATION - The Upsetters • 6. KENTUCKY SKANK - Lee Perry • 7. DOUBLE SIX - U Roy • 8. JUST ENOUGH TO KEEP ME HANGING ON - David Isaacs • 9. IN THE IAAH • 10. JUNGLE LION - The Upsetters • 11. WE ARE NEIGHBOURS - David Isaacs • 12. SOUL MAN - Lee Perry • 13. STICK TOGETHER - U Roy • 14. HIGH FASHION - I Roy • 15. LONG SENTENCE - The Upsetters • 16. HAIL STONES - I Roy • 17. IRONSIDE • 18. COLD WEATHER • 19. WRAP YOU WAA - The Upsetters

Well, the idea of an Upsetter box set is really exciting, but in this case the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. It combines three Upsetters albums from the 1970s, Africa's Blood, Rhythm Shower, and Double Seven (see above) and certainly features a lot of terrific performers (Dave Barker, U Roy, Dillinger) but just doesn't have enough rocket fuel to get off the ground. Some killers include Dillinger's version of "Tighten Up", the always amazing "Kentucky Skank", and U Roy's "Double Six".

UPSETTING THE NATION - The Upsetters & Friends
(CD: Trojan CDTRL330) 1969 - 1970 • Produced by Lee Perry

1. EIGHT FOR EIGHT • 2. OUTER SPACE - The Upsetters • 3. TO LOVE SOMEBODY - Busty Brown • 4. SOULFUL I • 5. MAN FROM MI5 - The Upsetters • 6. I'LL BE WAITING - The Termites • 7. TEN TO TWELVE - The Upsetters • 8. KIDDY O - The Muskyteers • 9. MEDICAL OPERATION • 10. NIGHT DOCTOR • 11. SELF CONTROL - The Upsetters • 12. CRYING ABOUT YOU - Busty Brown • 13. THUNDERBALL - The Upsetters • 14. BUILD MY WHOLE WORLD AROUND YOU - Dave Barker • 15. ONE PUNCH • 16. THE VAMPIRE - The Upsetters • 17. PRISONER OF LOVE • 18. I WAS WRONG - Dave Barker

Another terrific showcase of The Upsetters' talent. Unlike the weirdo Upsetter Collection (see above), this shows off some of Lee Perry's hits - in case you thought he couldn't produce a song that didn't glow in the dark. Killer tracks include "Prisoner Of Love" by the Wilson Pickett of Reggae, Dave Barker, the ear piercing "Eight For Eight", the heartbreak skank of The Termites' "I'll Be Waiting", and my personal all time favorite reggae song, the amazing "Medical Operation".

VERSION LIKE RAIN - Various Artists with The Upsetters
(CD: Trojan CDTRL278) 1972 - 1976 • Produced by Lee Perry

Musical Shower: 1. WANT A WINE - Leo Graham • 2. STICK TOGETHER - U Roy • 3. DOUBLE WINE - The Upsetters • Fever Storm: 4. FEVER - Junior Byles • 5. HOT & COLD VERSION - Augustus Pablo & The Upsetters • 6. THIS WORLD - Milton Henry • 7. FEVER - Susan Cadogan • 8. INFLUENZA VERSION - The Upsetters • Babylon Deluge: 9. BEAT DOWN BABYLON - Junior Byles • 10. INFORMER MAN - Junior Byles & Jah T • 11. OUTFORMER VERSION - The Upsetters • 12. BABYLON'S BURNING - Max Romeo, Niney & Lee Perry • 13. BEAT VERSION - The Upsetters • 14. FREEDOM FIGHTER - Bunny & Ricky • 15. IRON WOLF - The Upsetters • 16. BET YOU DON'T KNOW - Shenley Duffus

This is for serious Lee Perry / Upsetters fans or reggaeologists only, but it's an interesting album. It's common practice in reggae to use rhythm tracks more than once with different vocals to create new songs, and this album lays that practice on you. All of the "Musical Shower" tracks use the "Want A Wine" rhythm, "Fever Storm" uses "Fever", and "Babylon Deluge" is all "Beat Down Babylon". It's a great rhythm shower - killers include Susan Cadogan's sexy version of "Fever", and all of the "Beat Down Babylon" versions, especially "Informer Man".
